Every year around this time we see many people walk across the stage, celebrating a milestone moment and receiving a document that says, “Hey, you made it”.
Following this incredible experience the former student breathes a sigh of relief, soaks in the moment and then maybe ponders, “Where am I going now”?
Employers (or a church) have recruited some of these gifted people and the next step for them is somewhat clear. Many others wait for a call.
For each one of these women or men, the next step can be filled with the excitement of new beginnings.
A new season of life. Jobs. Ministry callings.
It is truly a season of expectations.
Over the years I have spent many hours with people in ministry who have been overwhelmed with the weight of some of these expectations. Many of them have had to deal with things like:
- Unclear job descriptions
- Lack of helpful accountability
- Unrealistic assumptions
- Other unknown factors
A couple of wonderful books dealing with “expectations” are:
“Your First Two Years in Youth Ministry” by Doug Fields
“Sustainable Youth Ministry” by Mark deVries
These are really helpful reads for anyone in Youth ministry.
What about you? What has been your experience? What are some healthy ways churches (or classes) can support and walk with those who enter ministry (youth or otherwise) for the first time?
