April Showers Bring May Flowers

"Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful for those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God." Hebrews 6:7

Nature is a great teacher. In this passage, the focus is on the rain as it falls on the land. Rain is fascinating. God asked Job the question, "Does the rain have a father?" ( Job 38:28)

Dr. John DeVries, who taught chemistry years ago at Calvin College, wrote a book called, Beyond the Atom. In response to God's question he wrote, "Yes. Implanted in every rain drop is a speck of dust. Molecules of water gather and adhere to it. Without dust there would be no rain. Without rain there would be no food. So, we all need dust to live."

John and Jerre DeYoung were missionaries working the the Christian Literature Crusade in the country of Chile. They distributed Christian literature with a bookstore in Santiago as their base. We received a letter from them dated August 20, 1968. It said, "Dear friends, How long can a country survive without rain? We don't know. Santiago and the central valley of Chile have had no rain for 10 months. The livestock are starving in the fields. The crops are not growing well. Water supplies are low. Pray for rain for Chile."

How long can a believer survive without the life-giving water of the Word of God? 

"As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth; it will not return empty, but  will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:10,11)

"Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters." (Isaiah 55:1) 

"On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, 'If a man is thirsty let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." (John 7:37, 38)
