Located at the foot of the Himalayan Mountains, Bhutan is a small country with a population of 650,000 and Gross National Product per capita is only $1200. However, the happiness index of the people in this country is the eighth in the world. Wang Chuk, king of Bhutan, has a special governing philosophy. He created the concept of Gross National Happiness and used it as a barometer of state administration. When all the countries in the world are trying to improve GDP, Bhutan is trying to improve Gross National Happiness (GNH).
The king kept 60 percent of the land in forests and green mountains. He has made the most of national budget for education and health care. And he put priority on protecting forest resources over economic development, so that people in Bhutan can preserve a country full of forest and natural resources. Tourism in this country can bring enormous material resources, but they strictly restricted foreign visitors. The king himself lived in a log cabin in the forest, leaving the concept of rich and poor out of existence and becoming a citizen of nature. As a result, the average life span of the people has increased by more than 20 years, and the happiness of its people has also become one of the highest in the world. Bhutan was able to get the name ‘Shangri-La,’ the last kingdom on Earth.
But what are our standards and perspectives on happiness today? Our environment has structural problems in increasing this happiness index. We're living in a world where we have to compete for survival in the jungle. The scene of life is turning into a battle ground for fierce survival every day. We have been so busy that we can't be conscious enough from dawn to late night. People say they've gathered materials and built a foundation for life, but they are constantly losing their families and family members.
And at this point, people might say, "It was not the happiness I wanted...". We need to realize it now. Now is the time to realize the symptom of the times and to find the good will of God. Even individuals and families who believe cannot achieve the truthful happiness without following the Biblical principles. The Gospel of Jesus is teaching us the principle of true happiness and the ultimate way of improving our happiness index.
