With 64 years of service in the Christian Reformed Church of North America, World Renew Disaster Response Services (DRS) is known for restoring homes and hope after disasters across North America. In this FYI article, we want to highlight five things you may not know about DRS!

1. DRS responds to disasters long-term. When the headlines fade and media coverage shifts after a disaster, we stay in communities for the long-term. After other organizations conclude important relief work, such as providing food, water, and shelter, DRS volunteers repair damaged homes for homeowners without the resources to recover.

2. DRS works with local recovery partners. When we enter a community, DRS responds to disasters alongside a local recovery partner. Local partners know their community’s strengths, challenges, and potential. We yield to their expertise, leadership, and strategic decision-making which will remain present long after we move on to the next community hurting after a storm.

3. We have a beloved office companion, Cinch. Cinch, our Operations Coordinator’s loyal pup, is DRS’s unofficial emotional support dog. When the work feels heavy or overwhelming, Cinch is often nearby for some cuddles!

4. Church support is critical to DRS’s mission. Through giving, volunteerism, and advocacy, churches make our response efforts possible. DRS couldn’t do this work without faithful believers who are committed to doing justice and loving mercy alongside World Renew.

5. We love Taco Tuesday. If you find DRS gathered around the table for a meal, there’s a chance we are enjoying Poncho’s Tacos, a family-owned Mexican restaurant located near World Renew’s office in Byron Center, Michigan! It’s our team’s favorite fuel for busy days.
