Why I Am a Disability Advocate - Cara Milne

Cara became a disability advocate because a past disability advocate from her congregation asked her to consider serving because she said Cara “would be a perfect fit.”  While she worked with people with disabilities, disability advocacy wasn’t connected back to her faith until this opportunity came. 

“I was worried that I’d be on my own in trying to solve problems and support families, when in fact, I realized that there was a whole group of people who were there to support me.” She soon realized that she didn’t need to have all the answers but needed to build relationships in trying to figure out methods and solutions together. Cara shares a story of a family who came to her congregation after being turned away from many others, and the need to “start where they were at” and let relationships evolve over time. “I think our church became better just slowly growing with the family.” Listen to the story in Cara’s own words below.
