Calvin Seminary Professor Sarah Schreiber has just completed work on a basic Bible Overview online learning resource. This resource will be useful for potential commissioned pastors, current and aspiring leaders in lifelong learning, and even for potential adult education settings in churches.
The Candidacy Committee is thrilled to recognize this resource as an addition to a growing number of resources being provided for training of commissioned pastors. See more resources for commissioned pastors.
“It is good for classes to have solid tools in providing training for those they will examine and ordain into this localized pastoral office,” said Director of Candidacy David Koll. “Prof Schreiber is an excellent teacher, and those who study this material in self-study or in a small group are bound to be enriched by it.”
This Bible Overview resource provides a condensed overview of the Bible and can be completed in about 15 hours. It traces the themes of creation, fall, and redemption and presents the Bible as the one true story of the entire world. Participants will read The Drama of Scripture: Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story (2nd ed.), by Craig G. Bartholomew and Michael W. Goheen. This educational and formational tool is meant to complement training specific to one’s ministry context.
What sets this new resource apart from the corresponding Bible Survey resource is that it requires much less time. The Bible Survey requires approximately 120 hours of work/engagement. This new resource aims at about 15 hours total.
The Bible Overview has two Bible knowledge quizzes of 25 questions each that are graded immediately and automatically in the seminary tool called Canvas. The rest of the feedback for the student comes from the learning partner or mentor.
Registering will give you access to our Canvas system. This is where you will be able to view the content of the various resources. Other resources currently available include CRC Church Polity, Foundations: Creeds and Reformed Confessions, Hebrew Fundamentals, and Digital Bible Tools.
The fee is $125 for one year of access (for 2020-2021). Attached is a "syllabus overview" of the course.
