New Coffee Break Groups in Cape Town

Last week in Cape Town, South Africa, a women’s ministry leader and two seminary students began leading their very first Coffee Break small groups. Despite facing challenges such as finances, these young leaders are eager to dive into Bible study with their groups. They recently attended a two-day Coffee Break training in Cape Town, along with forty other pastors, missionaries, and small group leaders.

This training was led by Lois Cho, a Coffee Break workshop leader invited to Cape Town by Korean missionaries there. Over the two days, attendees listened to lectures and participated in small group practice sessions using Discover Ruth. Lois noted that the focus of the event was on training and exercises, in order to equip attendees to start new small groups as soon as possible.

Looking back at the event, Lois found that the attendees were most struck by the method of inductive Bible study that Coffee Break uses. Small group leaders were used to lecturing students, so the method for group members to find out answers for themselves through questions and discussion was a new one. The leaders were happy about this new style because it “encouraged the students to be leaders.”

Lois also spoke to the value of small groups for the missionaries and pastors themselves, pointing out that they need to participate in small groups together “so that they can share their vision, life, and struggles.” For example, two of the new Coffee Break groups will be for pastors’ wives. Lois hopes that through meeting together in this way, the missionaries will find a stronger unity.

As the newly-equipped leaders are beginning to lead Coffee Break groups and draw on their recent training, please pray for them and for their Coffee Break groups.
