Coaching Corner: Parenting Workshops at VBS

As Pastor Jun Kim from the New Westminster (B.C.) CRC was planning the annual VBS program, he approached Faith Formation Ministries’ regional catalyzer Liz Tolkamp and invited her to help him put together parenting workshops that would take place while the children were in VBS.
Liz readily agreed.
Kim serves as the pastor of discipleship and multicultural ministry alongside lead pastor Rev. Andrew Beunk in their increasingly diversifying congregation. Pastor Kim and Liz arranged for three workshops hosted by area CRC leaders on the topics of family faith formation, boundaries in the home, and digital technology and families. Liz herself led the boundaries workshop, using the Circle of Grace materials promoted by CRC Safe Church Ministries. Afterward one parent commented to her group, “I’m realizing this week that I need to be much more intentional concerning our home faith formation practices. Thank you.” Pastor Kim came away realizing that he needs to rethink some of his own approaches to discipleship.
We at Faith Formation Ministries love to partner with congregational initiatives such as this one as part of our way of living out our “better together” cooperative relational model. How might your congregation benefit by taking a walk with us?
Faith Formation Ministries provides congregational faith formation leaders the opportunity to meet in-person or connect digitally or by phone with members of our team and other ministry leaders for coaching and support. Whether it’s a one-time, one-on-one conversation or a long-term peer group, we are here to help. For more information about our regional catalyzer, visit crcna.org/FaithFormation/coaching!
