Facing a Fork in the Road, How Can I Know God's Will?

"My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work." John 4:34

Jesus said that after his disciples had returned from Samaria and offered him food to eat. Jesus found satisfaction in doing the will of the Father who sent him. He knew what the Father wanted and he set his heart on doing the Father's will.

What is God's will for you and me? Facing the need to make a decision, like a fork in the road, how can we know God's will?

F.B. Meyer proposed three tests to know God's will. He wrote, "When I was crossing the Irish Channel one dark, starless night, I stood on the deck by the captain and asked him, 'How do you know where Holyhead Harbor is on so dark a night as this?' He said, 'Do you see those three lights on the shore? Those three must line up behind each other as one, and when we see them so united, we know the exact position of the harbor's mouth.' 

When we want to know God's will, there are three things which will always concur —the inward impulse, the Word of God, and the trend of circumstances. God in the heart, impelling you forward, God in his Book confirming whatever he says in your heart, and God in the circumstances, which are indicative of His will. Never start until these three agree."

Like good food, Jesus found that doing God's will was supremely satisfying. The Father's will for Jesus meant suffering, dying on a cross, and rising from the dead. May we experience the same satisfaction in finding God's will and doing it every day!
