Christmas Reflections

As I’ve taken time for reflection in this Christmas season, my thoughts often wander to safe church themes. In Safe Church Ministry, we fight against the terrible darkness of abuse. The lights of Christmas remind me of the light of our Lord, and the power of light to reveal truth, and to overcome darkness.

Advent is a time to wait: “I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits and in his word I put my hope” (Psalm 130:5). Often in Safe Church Ministry, we are caught captive in a waiting mode, waiting to be heard, waiting for people to agree, waiting for actions to happen, waiting for justice… We sing, “Oh come, oh come Immanuel; and ransom captive Israel…”

While people were expecting a conquering king, Jesus came as a poor baby and went on to die a shameful death on a cross. Yet now he is lifted up to the highest place, his name is above all names, and one day every knee will bow to him. Can you see the implications of this pattern?

Wherever we find ourselves right now, we must keep the long view in mind. Our strength lies in humility, trust, and patience through suffering. The means are as important as the ends. We must resist the temptation to misuse the power and gifts we’ve been given to pursue our own ends. Instead we are called to follow Jesus, to submit to the Lord’s better plan. That principle holds true for all of our life with Christ. It’s no different in the work of Safe Church Ministry. In the darkness, we wait, watching for his light. We hold on to hope, believing that He is coming!
