Meet Scholarship Recipient: Charles Muting’a

The Multiracial Student Scholarship Fund is one of the strategies employed by the Office of Race Relations (ORR) to develop multiracial congregational leadership in the CRCNA. Recipients attend one of the higher learning institutions affiliated with the denomination—Calvin University, Dordt University, The King’s University, Redeemer University, Kuyper College, Trinity Christian College, and Calvin Theological Seminary. They have also expressed a strong desire to train for and to engage in the ministry of racial reconciliation in church and/or in community.

Through bountiful gifts given last year, the ORR was able to award scholarships to seven students for the 2020/21 school year. It’s our privilege to introduce you to Charles Muting'a, one of these seven recipients. Read his brief biography below and some of his thoughts on the importance of social justice.

"I'm an ordained minister from Kenya, Africa. I am married to Eunice, who serves as a pastor in the Africa Inland Church (A.I.C), and we are blessed with four boys. I have believed in Jesus since I was 10 years old. When God called me into his service, I joined a Bible college, Scott Christian University, to study for a bachelor’s degree in theology and then a master’s degree in education.

I have been a pastor and have been training pastors for 20 years, and I am a Principal in Bible teaching. I was compelled by the Holy Spirit to seek more training, and I joined Calvin Theological Seminary for a master’s degree in Pastoral Care and Leadership. I attend the African Community Fellowship CRC in Grand Rapids, Mich.

I have always emphasized justice for all. The main principle is that Christ came to break the walls of racism, tribalism, nepotism, gender, class, religion, and any form of negativity to the human race. Through Jesus Christ we are a new creation, and we are called to reconcile all people to God and to one another. The agape love of God drives me to serve God and his people with all humility. I thank God for seeing me, by his grace, as a vessel to be used by him. I always listen to God's leading wherever he wants me to serve him."
