Meet Scholarship Recipient: Joshua

The Multiracial Student Scholarship Fund is one of the strategies employed by the Office of Race Relations (ORR) to develop multiracial congregational leadership in the CRCNA. Recipients attend one of the higher learning institutions affiliated with the denomination—Calvin University, Dordt University, The King’s University, Redeemer University, Kuyper College, Trinity Christian College, and Calvin Theological Seminary. They have also expressed a strong desire to train for and to engage in the ministry of racial reconciliation in church and/or in community.

Through bountiful gifts given last year, the ORR was able to award scholarships to seven students for the 2020/21 school year. It’s our privilege to introduce you to “Joshua”, one of these seven recipients. Read his brief biography below and some of his thoughts on the importance of social justice.

Hello, my name is “Joshua” [name changed to protect identity]. I come from the underground church in China. Currently I am a third-year M.Div. student at Calvin Theological Seminary. My call is to become a pastor or a missionary in the future. For the past couple of years I have served as a missionary to Myanmar and West Africa.

On the mission field I have been exposed to some cultures that are very different from my own, through which I learned more about people who are of a different race and about their passion for God and humanity. I have witnessed lots of persecution and poverty, which has made me think about the restoration work Christ has done for us and about his invitation for us to participate in the restoration of the world as well as humanity as a whole. Most of the suffering, pains, and struggles in the world are actually caused by injustices such as racial discrimination, exploitation, tyranny, and more.

 

As ambassadors of Christ, we are called to bring the good news to those who are yet to know him and to educate those who are already followers to better follow God’s good intentions for his creation by pursuing social justice and equipping the churches to be better witnesses for God in this world.
