Inspire 2022 Workshop Training: Active Bystander Training

This post is one of many conversations taking place in anticipation of Inspire 2022, set to happen in Tinley Park (a suburb of Chicago, Illinois) on August 4–6, 2022. Sign up to receive Inspire 2022 emails, which include the latest news on speakers, special opportunities, registration, and more. We hope to see you there!

Have you heard of the bystander effect? Very simply put, the more people present when someone is in distress, the less likely that person is to receive help.

In this workshop, participants will be encouraged to become an active bystander, someone who is ready to challenge the bystander effect by stepping in to support a person. There are a number of ways this can be done in a peaceful way that leads to positive results.

In this training you will explore:

  • how to intervene safely
  • how to help a situation deescalate
  • non-violent communication strategies
  • what it means to take the third side

You will look at Biblical stories through the lens of the active bystander and then consider ways in which you can implement this training in your church and your community.

This workshop will be facilitated by Becky Jones, Volunteer and Communications Specialist, Safe Church Ministry.

This workshop will be taking place on Friday, August 5th, 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM
