What is your role at the CRCNA? How did you come to your position?
I am currently the Compensation and Benefits Manager in the U.S. Human Resources department. I'm responsible for managing the compensation program and overseeing a variety of employee benefits, including medical, dental, vision, paid time off, and leave related to serious medical conditions. Additionally, I ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws. On occasion, I also get the opportunity to assist churches. I will be celebrating 20 years with CRCNA in April, having started in the pension office working with the minister’s pension plan before fully transitioning to HR in 2006. Over the years, I’ve held multiple roles within HR, gaining increased responsibility and opportunities for growth.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Everyday I try to strike a balance of routine and unexpected tasks. Mainly, I manage cyclical responsibilities like open enrollment, compensation analysis, and compliance reporting, so I have to prioritize whichever issue is most pressing at the moment. Given our organization's reach across 23 states, staying updated on changing employment and benefit laws has becoming increasingly important. I also do a lot of foundational HR work, ensuring that everyone's questions and concerns are addressed promptly.
What is one thing you've learned while working at the CRCNA?
It is hard to narrow down just one thing that I have learned working at the CRCNA. I think the complexity of the structure of the CRCNA surprised me when I started. After 20 years, I think I almost have a handle on it. What stands out to me, though, is the consistent dedication and care the employees have for the CRC. This has stayed the same, despite the many changes that have come about over the last two decades.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
I enjoy the complexity of my position and I very much enjoy my co-workers and employees. Having the opportunity to connect and work with the human resources department in Canada is an extension of my position that I enjoy, as it provides a way for me to stay connected with our friends to the east (or as some would say, the North).
What are you most passionate about in terms of serving and equipping congregations?
I'm passionate about our employees here at the denominational office. I want to make sure that our staff have everything they need to succeed so they can go out and work with our churches and congregations to their full potential.
