Over the past five years, Thriving Essentials has served as a flagship curriculum, training over 1,800 ministry leaders across 350 churches to help CRC congregations rediscover their vital purpose.

We are excited to launch a new blog series that pulls back the curtain on the theology and foundations of this workshop. Designed for everyone from seasoned elders to brand-new volunteers, Thriving Essentials centers on four core pillars: Mission, Discipleship, Discernment, and Leadership.

Over the coming months, we will explore how these pillars provide a sturdy foundation that shifts a church’s focus from human-driven strategies to divine agency. The following blog themes highlight the course's core paradigms, its theological foundations, and the practical impact it has on both pastors and lay leaders. Here’s a teaser on some of the topics that this series will address:

Reclaiming Our Purpose

Thriving Essentials tackles the idea of "mission drift"—the state where a congregation functions more like a voluntary association than a community sent by God. By recognizing mission as an essential attribute of the Triune God, leadership is freed from the burden of serving competing internal wants and can instead join God’s work to redeem all dimensions of life.

Avoiding the "Titanic Effect"

We will also examine the "Titanic effect," a warning for leaders who become so consumed with the technical duties of "managing the ship" that they lose sight of the primary mission. Thriving Essentials can provide practical tools to help churches move from a fixed mindset to an organic process of discovery.

From Deciding to Discerning

How does your leadership team make decisions? Many councils rely on a "deciding mindset" based on logic and power plays. This article will describe how Thriving Essentials encourages a "discerning mindset," which assumes Jesus is the actual head of the church.

Owning Your Influence

The Thriving Essentials course dismantles the myth that leadership is a title reserved for the few. Leadership is influence! is an idea the training introduces that shows how individuals should use their God-given capacity to move others toward His goodness.

Subsequent articles in this blog series will also delve into the distinctly Reformed theological foundations of the Thriving Essentials curriculum and explain the pedagogy (method of teaching) of the course. Join us as we explore these foundations and discover what is possible when a whole church congregation aligns around a shared, unified vision.

Are you ready to see how these foundational pillars could spark new energy in your specific ministry context?
