Have you ever played soccer with a disorganized team? A team where the biggest, toughest, most obnoxious players each go their own way, ignoring the rules and other team members. They never win a game against an organized team, unless a coach shows up to guide them, explain rules and helps all players work together to be the best team they can be.
The coach is the key, no matter how good a star player is or how many there are, they cannot win a game without their coach’s guidance. And if that team fails the coach answers for it. If it fails . . .
There is one team that will never fail. When players listen to the Coach and don’t put themselves ahead of Him or give up, they will succeed. There may be many extra innings but they will win, every time.
You know what team that is. You meet it every Sunday and hopefully more often. It’s the team God set up for all humanity – Team Jesus.
You’ve got the instruction book, our Bible. You’ve got the Coach, Jesus. And you’ve got something that no worldly coach will ever have – you’ve got the Holy Spirit within, guiding and helping whenever you pay attention and truly seek Him.
Team Jesus has been around for a couple of millennia now and is certainly successful in many of God’s Churches, so why is the world still so vulgar and disorganized? Fault-finding and finger-pointing are pointless, please don’t indulge those – forgive as our coach has taught us. Let’s consider, ponder and find a way forward together. A way that will help unknowing folks want to come home.
Most churches are unified in their belief of God and Jesus, their acceptance of the Holy Spirit and are happy to proclaim that in their services. But what happens outside a unified church is also important, remember the great commission. How can the church become unified with the world without being corrupted by it, without setting God’s Word aside as only a nice suggestion?
What did the Apostles do? Were people more intelligent in Jesus’ time? Were they able to discern things that we cannot? It’s been proven that people were just as intelligent now as they were then – human intelligence has not changed since Jesus walked amongst us. We do have more knowledge, but what’s knowledge without a team, without a spiritual leader, without Christian discernment?
What did Paul, Silas and Timothy do? What did other church leaders in the Old and New Testaments do? The answers are in God’s Word. Perhaps review Acts, an epistle or two, consider John 13:35 and Matthew 28:16-20. Meditate a bit and consider how your life experience compares. What can you realistically do with your gifts, and maybe encourage others to do, for human unity?
We know how the world is now. Consider why society is devolving so badly? Why do different denominations exist? What do you think? Please stop, ruminate on these questions and consider your thoughts carefully. You don’t have to be a scholar or church leader; we’re all unique, we all know things that others don’t. Understanding will become clearer as you think, consider Christ’s love and listen for Spirit’s input. You may find a path that the rest of us never would.
When every player listens to the Coach, respects and co-operates with other players, our team wins. As this is presently a fallen world we may lose some skirmishes, but we know how it ends – Team Jesus wins – the Bible says so. Please check Daniel 7 or Revelation, when we listen to our Coach and stay united in His ways as His people, we win.

Hello David,
It's unclear to me what you mean when you ask, "How can the church become unified with the world...?" Is the church called to be unified with the world?
There are a number of Bible passages that would seem to indicate that such a unity or unification is neither possible nor desirable.
"You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God." James 4:4
"If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you." John 15:19
"I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world." John 17:14.
"Do not be surprised, my brothers and sisters, if the world hates you." 1 John 3:13
Do you have a different idea of the church being unified with the world that I'm not seeing?
Hi Eric...
Isn't the object of the article asking Christ followers to focus on the "great commission?"
Hi Lubbert,
Probably so, but of course how we understand and go about obeying the great commission is not always uniformly understood. My question is meant to seek better understanding of how the author views the relationship between the church and the world given the language of his question.
In the authors's question, "How can the church become unified with the world without being corrupted by it, without setting God’s Word aside?" doesn't he direct you to to the answer you are looking for?
The second part of his sentence is indicative of the concerns articulated in your scriptural quotations. What you are looking for would appear to be articulated in the following paragraph, "What did Paul, Silas and Timothy do? What did other church leaders in the Old and New Testaments do? The answers are in God’s Word. Perhaps review Acts, an epistle or two, consider John 13:35 and Matthew 28:16-20."
Hi Lubbert,
No, that is not getting at my question. I am seeking to understand what the author means by "unified with the world". Saying that we should avoid corruption of the world does not explain what it means to be unified with the world. Can the church in any way have unity with the world? In what sense? Loving people in the world and spreading the gospel to the world is not being unified with the world. It is that phrase I am trying to understand from the author's perspective. I'm hopeful that he can shed some further light on what he means by that. Thanks for the conversation.
Eric
Hi Eric...
Is it possible that you are reading something into the article that is not there; or is not related to the focus of article?
Nowhere in the article does the author argue that the Body of Christ can be "unified with the world." Secondly, the author provides specific parts of scripture as a guide to how to relate to the world "and fellow christians" in their brokenness from our Lord and Saviour.
Hi Lubbert,
No, I'm not reading anything into the article. In fact, I haven't said anything about the article. I have expressed curiosity about what the author means by a certain phrase. That is all. You many not be curious, but I am. I'm perplexed by your apparent confusion or discomfort with my curiosity. Perhaps it is you that is reading something into my question?
Gentlemen, thank you for your observations.
My intent was to find ways to bring unknowing folks into God's house, without corrupting the church by appeasing worldly demands. Perhaps I could have worded that sentance better, it seems to be an unintended distraction. My apologies for that.
