Meet Rev. Tim Rietkirk, Chaplaincy Consultant and Endorser at Thrive.

What is a Thrive Ministry Consultant?

Ministry Consultants bring together a wide array of experiences and expertise that allow them to serve congregations with wisdom and compassion. They are practitioners, pastors, and seasoned ministry leaders who are eager to develop tools or serve as resources for the wellbeing of your congregation.

In what areas of ministry do you encourage and equip congregations?

I equip congregations in their support and supervision of chaplains who serve in institutional settings which require specialized training. I serve as the endorser who comes alongside a congregation and jointly supervises the ministry of Ministers of the Word and commissioned pastors who extend pastoral ministry beyond the walls of the church to people who are often hurting or in crisis.

How did you come into your role?

My journey into this role as the Chaplaincy Consultant started in my second year of Calvin Seminary when I became a military chaplain candidate for the US Army. After ordination and serving a congregation for a few years, I became an active duty Army Chaplain for 20 years and then retired in 2016.  After the army, I completed a yearlong Clinical Pastoral Education residency at the San Diego Veterans Affairs Healthcare System which led to working for several years as a hospice chaplain in San Diego County. I was hired in 2021 as the Chaplaincy and Care Ministry Director, which was then enfolded into Thrive in 2023.

What brings you the most joy as you journey alongside churches and ministry leaders?

I enjoy working with not only our current chaplains and their calling churches but especially helping those who discern a call to chaplaincy ministry and to see how they bless those that they serve and how God sustains and encourages them in a challenging ministry.
