Hip Hop Heidelberg Catechism, Part V: Salvation on the Streets (by Reginald Smith)

SALVATION:            GOD THE SPIRIT

Lord’s Day 20

Q & A 53        GHOSTBUSTERS?

What do you believe about “the Holy Spirit”?

First, I believe that he, along with the Father and the Son, is eternal God.

Genesis 1:1-2   In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth didn't have any shape. And it was empty. Darkness was over the surface of the ocean. At that time, the ocean covered the earth. The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Second, I believe he was given to me personally, by faith; so that I can know Christ and receive all his blessings; so he can be my counselor; and so he can be in me forever.

Galatians 3:14 Christ Jesus set us free so that the blessing given to Abraham would come to non-Jews through Christ. He did it so that we might receive the promise of the Holy Spirit by believing in Christ.

John 15:26 I will send the Friend to you from the Father. He is the Spirit of truth, who comes out from the Father. When the Friend comes to help you, he will give witness about me.

Acts 9:31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. The Holy Spirit gave the church strength and boldness. So they grew in numbers. And they worshiped the Lord.

John 14:16-17 I will ask the Father. And he will give you another Friend to help you and to be with you forever. The Friend is the Spirit of truth. The world can't accept him. That is because the world does not see him or know him. But you know him. He lives with you, and he will be in you.

1 Peter 4:14 Suppose people make fun of you because you believe in Christ. Then you are blessed, because God's Spirit rests on you. He is the Spirit of glory.

Idea: Caution: Spirit at Work.

SALVATION:            THE CHURCH

Lord’s Day 21

Q & A 54        HYPOCRITES WANTED?

I believe that God the Son through God the Spirit and the Word, out of the entire human race — from the beginning to the end, gathers, protects, and preserves for himself a community chosen for eternal life and united in true faith. I can be a part of this community forever, if I chose.

55        OUR POSSE or WHAT IS A CHURCH COMMUNITY?

First, that every believer is a member of this community.

Second, that each member has a duty to use his (or her) gifts (or talents) cheerfully and readily, to serve and encourage the other members.
