Take a deep breath. Just breathe.  Breathe in, breathe out. Inhale, exhale.

It’s no surprise that there are a wide variety of ways to encourage the same bodily action - taking a breath. Studies have shown that focusing on our breath - intentionally thinking about it, counting it, slowing it - have positive benefits on our parasympathetic nervous system. We are better able to regulate our minds and slow our heart rates. Outside of strictly the physical, breathing deeply can be an intentional way to be mindful of God’s presence through the work of the Spirit.

As we prepare for Synod 2024, some of us might feel anxious. Some might be feeling anticipation. Some peace. Our theme of “God With Us” lends itself well to some deep breathing through the practice of breath prayers. A focused inhalation while praying through the specific themes in the prayer guide, and an exhalation while praying “God with us.”  In, out.

What might it look like if we as God’s people in the Christian Reformed Church committed to these 12 breath prayers every day leading up to Synod? By intentionally slowing down and being mindful of the Spirit’s presence, how might we embody the promise of “God with us” as we prepare for June?  Try it for a few days! These can be done anywhere, anytime. By yourself, with a group, or with your whole congregation. As you pray be attentive to the Spirit’s nudging in your heart. Keep breathing, keep praying.

Inhale:    In our fear
Exhale:    God with us

Inhale: In peace and shalom
Exhale: God with us

In anxiety
God with us

In trust
God with us

When we think we’re alone
God with us

In the unknown
God with us

In community
God with us

In trouble
God with us

In love and joy
God with us

In doubt
God with us

In assurance
God with us

On mission
God with us

God with us
God with us

Amen
