Thanks, Colin, for the challenge to press on with hope! I look forward to the church living out the 4 milestones or signposts in the new ministry plan!!
One significant way to bless people in the "third third" of their lives is to promote and provide spiritual direction. I have been deeply blessed as I meet with a spiritual director on a regular basis!
Thanks, Colin, for this excellent article. As a past member of the denominational anti-racism team, a member of a diverse church which has long been committed to anti-racism training, I have personally attended five two day anti-racism training events over the past 20 years. Naming and understanding the dynamics of racism, both personal and systematic, are important, especially to white Americans who have the option of remaining unaware. However, as you mentioned in your article, engaging with someone of a different race is extremely important. My deep friendship with several African American couples has taught me far more than hours and hours of analysis could ever teach me about how it feels for my friends and gives me enough love and compassion to convict me and to move me to action.
Well said, Sean! We very much need to be alone together. I praise God for a pretty extensive network of support/accountability relationships and I grieve for Pastors and parishioners alike who feel like they are going it alone.
I am reading "Being Mortal" by Atul Gawande, "Invitation To A Journey: A Road Map for Spiritual Formation" by M. Robert Mulholland Jr., "Music of Silence" by David Steindl-Rast and "The Shattered Lantern: Rediscovering a Felt Presence of God" by Ron Rolheiser. I just bought "Joy Unspeakable: Contemplative Practices of the Black Church" by Barbara Holmes and am looking forward to reading it.

Thank you, Shawn, for reflecting the Jesus of love, invitation, relationship, communion and grace. Too many Christians fail to reflect Jesus in this non-judgmental "meet you where you are at" kind of way.
