The Significance of the Rainbow at Synod

Undoubtedly the most disturbing photo in the Synod issue of The Banner was the chalk drawing of the rainbow outside Calvin College's Fine Arts Building where Synod was held.
The rainbow has become the symbol of Pride, the global movement among gays.
A few thousand years earlier, the rainbow became a symbol of God's covenant promise with all humans on earth for all time: Noah said in Genesis 9: "When the rainbow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth." And God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth."
It borders on sacrilege that the Pride rainbow graced the sidewalk outside of the Christian Reformed Church's major assembly. I don't recall hearing any uproar from delegates at synod, or from Calvin Seminary profs.
Perhaps it's time that the church reclaims the rainbow as a sign of God's covenant "to all flesh on earth" instead of giving in to a horribly secular celebration of gay pride.

Great article Keith. The "rainbow" is also creeping into our CRC churches. Small flags on church signs and pins worn by members who support the Gay Pride parades. I think it is too late to reclaim the rainbow for Christian purposes. The church simple can not compete with the gay community regarding publicity. We are going to have to stay with the "cross" as the Christian symbol.
Governments can (and do) ban crosses but would never dare to ban a rainbow flag. Do we need an other symbol? I think not but there could be other thoughts about that.
