Elmhurst Little Lambs Leaders Mentor Parents

Lyn and Beth, Little Lamb leaders at Elmhurst CRC in Illinois, discovered the importance of mentoring beyond their classroom by supporting parents. You may find these methods as a way to encourage families to continue reading the Bible at home or continuing to show their little ones God’s love.
Jane D. Hull, a well known educator, understood that to support a child, one must also support their parents. Story Hour and Little Lambs create a space for children to grow in their faith and learning. Leaders also have the opportunity to directly impact families and homes as they support and encourage parents.
“At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to a child’s success is the positive involvement of parents.”
Beth and Lyn like their kids’ crafts to last and go home to the child’s parents. Pairing a Bible verses with crafts involve and engage the parents. “What is this?” or “Tell me about what you learned?” lead to learning for both the child and their families. Story Hour and Little Lamb lessons include beautiful story cards. Each week a story card goes home and each family has cards with pictures telling them more about God’s word.
“Some mom’s aren’t able to stay home with their kids and are busy with work,” says Lyn.
For these busy parents, Beth and Lyn use a different method. They involve parents by offering listening ears and support. Whether the family is experiencing illness or job loss, they offer a time of prayer for parents and volunteers before the start of each session.
“As they drop off their kids, we want to make Little Lambs a comfortable space,” says Beth
Parents may or may not participate in Coffee Break, but they find a supportive atmosphere for their children, themselves, and opportunities to connect with others and God’s love.
