Groundwork: Turning the Soil of God’s Word
When we think of spiritual disciplines we often think of a list of “to-dos.” Read the Bible regularly. Set aside time with God each day. Pray. For many of us, just doing these “basics” seems to take an inordinate amount of effort. Now throw-in a few more serious disciplines: fasting, solitude, study. If the basics challenge us, how do we expect to succeed with these? If you’re like me, intentionally missing lunch seems too daunting; even to spend the time praying. Thankfully, God’s grace gives strength to persevere through our weaknesses to build a solid spiritual foundation: For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ… -- Titus 2:11-13a (ESV).
This month, Groundwork began a new series on spiritual disciplines. Get comfortable (or maybe not too comfortable), open the Word, and enjoy these teaching conversations with hosts Dave Bast and Scott Hoezee.
Groundwork is a half hour radio and podcast, Bible-teaching program that digs into tough issues from God’s Word. Dave and Scott guide listeners in thoughtful, yet casual conversations, leading them to a practical understanding of the Bible in today’s culture.
Why Practice Spiritual Disciplines? Once we become Christians by the mighty power of God, there are disciplines, spiritual practices we need to engage in to keep our spiritual lives healthy and fit.
Prayer & Fasting. We explore two ways we can nurture our relationship with God by which Jesus Christ, Himself, provides us guidance.
Simplicity. How does the spiritual discipline of simplicity lead us another way from so much of contemporary society, and how does it make us grow closer to the heart of God?
