Policy Governance in the Church

Our church has been exploring various models to help our council govern better. One model we are exploring is Policy Governance, developed by John Carver. Have any churches implemented this model?

CRC Statement on Bible Being Inerrant?

I'm teaching a lesson to our youth next week on the Bible's infallibility and inerrancy. I found the CRC position on infallibility but only found one discussion on the Bible being inerrant. Any ideas?

When Was Article 73 Amended?

Synod 1987 amended articles 74-77; however, I can find no record as to when article 73 was amended. Does anyone have any information on this?

Who Is in Charge of an Ordination Service?

Does the senior pastor of a CRC church have to lead the installation service for elders and deacons or can an associate pastor (who is also ordained in the CRC as a minister of the Word) handle this responsibility?

Membership Transfer From Protestant Reformed Church?

From what I can tell we only accept straight transfers from RCA, EPC, and ECO. Does this mean that anyone coming from PRC, URC, PCA, etc. must profess their faith again in the CRC?

Transferring Supervision of a Retired Minister?

I am a clerk of council and need to transfer the credentials of a minister who has since retired and joined another congregation. Is this an actual form or can I simply draft a letter?

Christian Day Schools

Article 71 directs Councils to diligently encourage the members of the congregation to establish and maintain good Christian Schools in which the biblical, Reformed vision of  Christ's lordship over all creation is clearly taught.

Church Hierarchy and Submission To Spiritual Authority

Instead, we were like young children among you. Just as a nursing mother cares for her children. 1 Thessalonians 2:7 There are believers in our day that teach and believe that any hierarchical authority in the Church is wrong. That to submit to a Christian leader as above one is wrong and to have any leaders who are above other leaders is wrong also. Such thinking lauds the idea of the autonomous local Church, meaning that believers can act independently and freely in a local area without any jurisdiction or control. But as we look at the New Testament as a whole we see the Church was...

What Do Ministers Do?

Over time our official descriptions of what pastors do have grown longer. The latest evidence is a recommendation to add engaging in “the work of diaconal outreach” to the list.

Seduction by the 'spirit of the age'? Are Reformed people immune?

Have you heard of the Reformed person who says that since Abraham Kuyper said that "every square inch" of this world belongs to Christ, one must venture boldly into every sphere of life with the light of Christ? At first flush it sounds very good. But what happens if the prevalent 'spirit of the times' or the 'spirit of the age' sometimes called the Zeitgeist exerts its transformative and rather seductive effects on a church, notably a Reformed one? Impossible you say? Let us look at the data. Some dominant schools of thought in the 21st century zeit• geist \ noun the defining spirit or mood...

License to Exhort

In dealing with the questions around license to exhort, my council asked about the issue of accountability/mentorship for those with license to exhort. What is being done, or should be done to assist those with this license?

Church Membership Transfers

I was reading through my Christian Reformed Church Order Commentary (which every pastor should do on a Monday) and ran across something in the section on membership transfers. There it is mentioned that in the case of a member leaving a congregation and becoming part of a congregation not in ecclesiastical fellowship, that "the council provides the transfering member with a statement of membership indicating only the facts, date of baptism, date of public profession, length of membership and so on. * The member, not the council, then presents that document to the receiving church .* (emphasis...
