And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.
—2 Timothy 2:2
A Coffee Break Leader shares her story of discipling another (names have been changed).
I’ve been doing a Bible study over the phone with a new Christian. A couple of years ago, Esta, a cultural Muslim, attended a neighbourhood dinner at our church, and then found her way to Coffee Break. She wanted to know more about Jesus. Through the study of the book of Mark, and the support of our group, she came to know Jesus in a personal way.
Our Coffee Break group celebrated with her, hosting a brunch for her baptism. However, over the next year, Esta suffered from increasing anxiety, and stopped attending our group. One of our leaders began to meet with her in her home to continue the Bible study. But when COVID hit, the home Bible study stopped. Even though Coffee Break continued on Zoom, her anxiety prevented her from joining in that way.
Periodically I would call my friend Esta just to chat. I was concerned for her during this season of social isolation; I enjoyed our conversations. It occurred to me we could do the Bible study by phone as well. So we finished the study of Acts.
When we started Philippians this summer, she asked if her friend Rob could join us in the study. He also wanted to know more about Jesus. Now as we do our ‘3-way-call’ Bible study, Esta shares with her friend what she has learned about Jesus. She clarifies things for him. She’s beginning to be involved in the discipling of another. Esta is a 2 Tim. 2:2 disciple. She’s a disciple who’s discipling someone else. COVID interfered with our schedules. Anxiety makes connecting hard. But the word of God in the hands of a disciple is powerful and effective!
How about you? Can you share a story of discipling someone? Is there a way that you can encourage someone to disciple another?

Great story to illustrate discipling during COVID. There are still many ways to reach out. Thanks, Marian.
