Throughout the ups and downs of life, it's valuable to take a moment to reflect and remember that our lives are ultimately placed in God's hands. Amongst the uncertainty of the world, scripture reminds us that our faith is the central tenant of what sustains us.
All across the CRCNA, our members have leaned on specific bible verses; they serve as anchors in times of challenge, motivations for ministry, and as daily reminders of God's grace and faithfulness. The following verses and stories are from the denominational survey results. Each year, CRC churches participate it the survey on a rotating basis. I've gathered some of the most popular verses and reflections from the survey, all shared anonymously by members of the denomination who find strength, direction, and hope in God's word. The following scriptures are "life" verses; they serve as personal reminders of God's unwavering love, His guidance, and our purpose in His world.
Ephesians 2:8-10 – Saved by Grace
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
A retired pastor reflected on the grace that defines our salvation, remembering how these verses guided his ministry. For over 33 years, they reminded their congregation that it really is all about God’s grace. There is nothing we can do to earn it—it is a gift, freely given, a truth that underpins all of life.
Ephesians 3:20-21 – God’s Power in Our Lives
"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen."
One individual shared how this verse has been a daily reminder that God’s power is beyond what we can accomplish on our own. When faced with struggles, they turned to this truth for encouragement: God can do more than we can ask or imagine, and His strength enables us to face the day with faith.
Galatians 2:20 – Living by Faith in Christ
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
This verse has been cherished for generations, by one person's family, guiding them on mission work in Latin America and through chronic illness. It serves as a powerful declaration that our lives belong to Christ. Even amid chronic illness, this verse reminds them that Christ’s life is lived through them, offering comfort and purpose.
Numbers 6:24-26 – The Blessing of God’s Presence
"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace."
In the lowest moments, one individual found solace in these words. The image of God’s face shining upon them brought light into dark days, offering peace and hope. This blessing has become a source of daily joy, a constant reminder of God’s care and presence.
Psalm 100:5 – God’s Faithfulness Across Generations
"For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations."
For a couple married over 50 years, this verse is engraved in their wedding rings, symbolizing their trust in God’s blessing upon their family. They are reminded that God’s faithfulness sustains them and that their family’s future is in His hands.
Titus 3:4-5 – Saved by Mercy
"But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy."
A recovering perfectionist and self-identified Pharisee found comfort in this verse; it has reminded them daily that mercy, not personal righteousness, is the reason they are saved. This verse engenders humility and gratitude, shaping the way they interact with others and lean on God’s grace.
Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trusting in God’s Direction
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
This verse has served as a grounding truth for many; whether in marriage, through divorce, or seeking purpose when feeling lost in life, these words remind have reminded many to place their trust in God, not in their own plans. It’s a call to surrender dreams, desires, and fears at His feet, trusting that He is crafting something beautiful.
1 Peter 5:7 – Casting Our Worries on God
"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
For many survey respondents who live with anxiety, this verse has been a lifeline. It reminds them that God cares deeply and wants to carry their burdens. It is a daily practice to turn to God with worries and trust that He provides peace.
Micah 6:8 – Living Justly, Loving Mercy, Walking Humbly
"He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."
At 60, one individual reflected on how this verse encapsulates their life’s calling. It challenges them to pursue justice, extend kindness, and walk in humility, knowing that this journey reflects God’s heart for the world.
These life verses all stand as beacons of faith, pointing to God's mercy, grace, and faithfulness. They remind us that we find our identity, strength, and purpose in Christ, no matter what season or challenge we face. What are your life verses?
