Bible Verses for a New Year: Forming New Habits with Scripture

This is a series about Bible verses that have been foundational to the faith of many members of the CRCNA. The verses shared here have all been anonymously collected from the denominational survey, which one-fifth of CRCNA churches participate in every year. See scripture for life, from youth, for parenting, and for the foundation of faith.
It's 2025! New year, new slate, new resolutions — so many of us are hard at work for new resolutions. Now, just like most people, my resolutions (read more books! Go to new parks for my runs! Read the bible more! Connect more with my friends and family!) have never really worked out.
Many members of our denomination, however, have built stronger spiritual habits while relying on the strength of scripture. The following verses were provided by individuals who have filled out the denominational survey over the past half-decade. Take a moment to reflect on their wisdom and experience of letting Scripture guide their spiritual growth, practice, and wellbeing:
"Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."
This verse has served as a reminder to align one person's intentions with God’s will. As they make plans for the year, they’ve learned the importance of dedicating even the smallest habits to Him. Whether it’s committing to a regular prayer time or diving deeper into scripture, offering these practices to the Lord gives them purpose and grounding.
"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."
Habits take time to form, and it’s easy to lose motivation when results aren’t immediate. This verse has been a source of encouragement, reminding one member of the denomination to persevere, even when spiritual growth feels slow. Over time, they've seen how consistent prayer, scripture reading, and worship yield a harvest of peace, strength, and joy.
"The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you."
This passage has shaped how one man approaches trust and resilience. Knowing God’s name—His character, promises, and faithfulness—has given the member the confidence to keep seeking Him, even in hard seasons. As they memorize scripture and reflect on His Word, I find evidence of His unfailing presence, which strengthens my trust in Him.
"Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness."
This verse has inspired one individual to form a habit of daily gratitude. Every morning is a fresh opportunity to experience God’s mercy and faithfulness. By starting the day with prayer and thanksgiving, they’ve found it easier to focus on His goodness, even when challenges arise.
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble."
This verse has helped me see how spiritual habits extend beyond personal growth. As I build resilience through God’s comfort, they have been better equipped to encourage and support others. Sharing what they’ve learned through scripture, prayer, and worship becomes a way of living out their faith.

These verses have shaped habits that bring many of our brothers and sisters closer to God—memorizing scripture, spending time in prayer, using the Psalms as a guide for prayer, and reflecting on His promises. These practices don’t just bring spiritual growth; they also build resilience for life’s challenges.
As you step into this new year, consider the spiritual habits you’d like to develop. Whether it’s starting a new Bible reading plan, committing to daily prayer, memorizing scripture, connecting with your local congregation, or maybe joining a small group or taking a leadership role in a community-based ministry you're passionate about, remember that small, consistent steps can lead to profound transformation.
